WALL-E is Rolling His Way into the Criterion Collection
WALL-E, Pixar's 2008 masterpiece, is being added to the Criterion Collection, a curated list of films considered "important classic and contemporary films." Its inclusion means the film is getting a special edition 4K Blu-ray release, which comes with a bunch of extras.
This isn't the first time a movie has been made available in 4K, but — and I'm sorry to be that person — in my opinion, the box art for the quality version is much better than the standard 4K Blu-ray. It may also have a slightly better HDR master (it comes with Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10 Plus versions, versus the standard HDR10 for the regular release), and its three-disc set includes things like director Andrew Stanton's Gay Student Film, a Documentary. On Pixar, script notes, and production artwork.
As Polygon's Tasha Robinson points out, WALL-E is the first Disney/Pixar movie to be introduced to the collection, and is one of only a handful of animated films selected by Criterion. Personally, it's hard to think of a Pixar film that's more deserving; Despite being extremely short on dialogue, it's able to capture the attention of children and adults alike (albeit for different reasons — I first watched it when I was nine years old and loved adorable robots. was; nowadays I see it more as a cautionary tale than the best love story ever).
WALL-E will be available from Criterion on November 22, along with a 4K restoration of Spike Lee's Malcolm X , another great — but very different — movie.
